summer melts away slowly but surely,
as autumn creeps in
first it’s a morning in late August that feels a bit chilly
then an evening in September when you can see your breath
gold, crimson, sunset-orange and chocolate-brown begin to stain the summer-green canopy above, and the brightly-colored leaves begin to fall to the ground
I pick one up—it’s still mostly green, with veins of yellow and splotches of orange—and twirl the stem between my fingers, smiling contentedly
I know this season won't last long—and it’s a shame—but before the dead quiet of winter, I enjoy
the sound of drying leaves rustling above and beneath,
the smell of bonfire smoke in the air,
the comfort of thick sweaters and cardigans,
the taste of hot coffee from a chipped mug,
the bright colors of autumn,
and the bite of cool air in the mornings, reminding me to enjoy this while it lasts.
